Our mission
Currently, it is estimated that only 4% of farms in Canada are CanadaGAP® certified, meaning most farmers do not have the means to access larger, commercial retail markets. Through the creation of GAP Can, we want to support small scale producers in gaining access to larger commercial retail markets, therefore generating greater economic opportunities for these businesses and allowing them to operate more effectively. We believe as a company that we can create long-term change for these small scale producers as well as a permanent change to today’s system that seemingly benefits larger-scale, corporate farms.
Creation of GAP Can
Ty James, CEO and Founder of GAP Can, has been a commercial farmer and greenhouse grower for the past ten years. As a result of living in one of the most expensive areas in Canada, South Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Ty had carried out his business operations on leased farmland instead of on owned farmland for the first 8 years of his career. As with any commercial farming operation, Ty’s business required necessary infrastructure.
With new infrastructure, building permits and a financial investment would have been required, which benefit the property owner. Out of necessity, Ty financed and built the first prototype of GAP Can for use on the leased land where his business operations were based. Through construction and use of GAP Can, Ty has been able to reach a new level in commercial production and sales, and access larger commercial markets. Recognizing that lack of proper infrastructure on leased land is a growingi ssue, not only for Ty, but for many other small scale producers, Ty pulled together a team to begin developing the concept for GAP Can.
